STOP BREXIT MARCHES - LONDON 2019
For Londoners, 2019 was the year of the 'Stop Brexit' marches and demonstrations, which kicked off with the 'Put it to the People' march, on 23rd March (appropriately). This event attracted hundreds of thousands of so-called 'Remainers' from all over the UK. I travelled up on the train from Guildford to Waterloo, amidst the hats, flags and banners, and was astonished by the size of the crowds throughout the capital, and the exuberance, inventiveness and good humour of the marchers.
My intention was to photograph what was clearly going to be an historic event, probably from somewhere in the middle of the procession. As it turned out, and with encouragement from my wife, I managed to wriggle and blag my way into the group of press photographers lined up in front of the march, just as it set off. For the rest of the day, I mingled and chatted with the marchers and took hundreds of photographs.
Further 'Stop Brexit' demonstrations took place throughout 2019, often accompanied by my camera and me, culminating in another massive march on 19th October. Although the protests were ultimately unsuccessful, in their aim of stopping Brexit, they were extraordinary occasions and showed a large section of the British public at its most vociferous, tolerant and often hilarious best.
Here is a selection of my images from a politically turbulent year.
