ARPS Panel
Statement of Intent
On 23rd March 2019, thousands of ‘remain’ voters descended upon London and marched to Parliament Square, demanding a second referendum on the UK’s continued membership of the European Union. They paraded in their costumes and hats, waving flags and chanting, accompanied by a brass band. Having caught the country’s attention, the protesters kept returning until that December’s UK general election extinguished their aspirations.
Although these protests were ultimately unsuccessful, they showed a significant, largely ‘middle class’ section of the British public at its most vociferous, eloquent and good humoured. I followed the principal demonstrations, photographing the protagonists, observers and those maintaining order. This panel aims to document a quintessentially British approach to protesting. I have chosen to present the images in monochrome, in order to emphasise the narrative and focus the viewer’s attention on the cast of characters, rather than showcase the marchers’ brightly coloured costumes and accessories.
