Carnevale Di Venezia
Carnevale Di Venezia (Venice Carnival) dates from the late 11th century but was outlawed entirely during the 18th century, returned sporadically during the 19th century and has continued in its present form, taking place over ten days leading up to Shrove Tuesday, since 1979. Carnevale is famous for the elaborate masks and costumes worn by participants and the various theatrical performances held in and around Piazza San Marco. It attracts many thousands of visitors to Venice each year.
